Thirty-seven Chess players from as far as Grootfontein, Arandis, Karibib, Windhoek and the coast participated in the 2018 Dr Kehat Beukes two-day chess tournament, held at Swakopmund over the weekend. The Memorial Chess Tournament has a tradition that stretches back to 1994, and is one of the longest running competitions in Namibia in any sport. The tournament was the first to add an international flair as many people from different countries participated in it during the course of its existence. The founder of the tournament, Dr. Kehat Beukes, was the first black Specialist Physician in Namibia and also the President of the Namibia Chess Federation from 1994 -1999, and after his death in 1999, the tournament was renamed in his honour. The intent of the competition is to create a light and fun yet competitive event for chess players. It is considered to be some sort of heritage event. The tournament was played over one big section over two days, with prizes in sub-divisions as per the final standing in Cadet (under 12’s) , best youth, best women, and overall winner section The best CADET on the day was Jamie-Nicole Beukes, best youth player was Manfredo !Gaoseb, best Female player, Patience Tsuses, while Charles Eichab walked away with the overall winners title. Bank Windhoek has been sponsoring the tournament since 2014, and this year gave N$ 15 000 towards its organisation.
