Namibian marathon star Helalia Johannes running in the colours of Nedbank International, won her fourth successive SPAR Women's 10km Challenge when she led from start to finish to win the Tshwane race at the Supersport Park this weekend, achieving a record time of 32.29 minutes. Namibia's Commonwealth Games Gold medallist Helalia Johannes is rewriting the history books after she won a fourth consecutive title in the SPAR Grand Prix Challenge. The Namibian this weekend won the Tshwane SPAR Women's 10 kilometre Challenge to add to the Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town titles she captured earlier this year. Just over forty thousand people took part in the 10 and 5 kilometre event respectively but it was clear from the start that there was only one athlete to beat and that was Johannes. She took the lead from the start and the chasing pack were just never able to reel her in. Johannes was fresh from coming second in the Bogota half-marathon in Colombia, which was run at an altitude of 2700 metres. Currently preparing for the World Marathon Championships later this year, she entered the Supersport Park almost two minutes ahead of everybody else and eventually crossed the finish line in a new record time of 32 minutes 29 seconds. The runners were greeted and congratulated at the finish line by Caster Semenya, the race ambassador. Ethiopian junior Tadu Nare was second in 34.19 and Rutendo Nyahora from Zimbabwe was third in 34.40. Last year's winner and defending Grand Prix champion, Glenrose Xaba finished in fifth place, in 35.39. Johannes has confirmed that she would run in the Pietermaritzburg SPAR Challenge later this month after which her next big challenge will be the World Marathon Championships in Qatar in late September.
