The death of legendary boxing guru Hiskia Shigwedha has been described as a huge loss to the sport industry in the country. The 65-year-old died at the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital following a long illness. This was confirmed by his son. Family members and friends have been visiting the late Shiwedha's house in Ongwediva to pay their last respects to a man who left a boxing legacy. Shigwedha started his boxing career in 1977 at Walvis Bay, where he trained alongside other legendary boxers such as Noah Tjombonde, Harry Simon and Jaysen Petrus. In 1980, he moved to Tsumeb where he joined the Tsumeb Corporation Limited boxing club and trained alongside now retired boxers Nestor Tobias, Lizias Angula and Timoty Haikonda. Shigwedha represented Namibia before independence at various boxing championships in South Africa and later moved to northern Namibia, where he became a boxing trainer and referee. He is survived by his wife, four children and six grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
