Namibia has been taking part in the Sunfoil 3 Day Cup and the Provincial 1 Day Challenge for many years. Yesterday, however, Cricket Namibia - through a press release - announced that they are withdrawing from the competition. Their frequent travels to South Africa, they said, have become difficult - especially considering the increase in travel cost and the long distances they have to overcome. Cricket Namibia, nonetheless, are thankful for their past experiences in SA. “We are extremely grateful to Cricket South Africa for allowing us to take part in these completions, whose involvement has played a significant role in the development of our National Men’s Cricket team. As testimony to this fact we achieved a first for Namibia in that we reached the final of the 3 Day Cup in 2018, losing to KZN, and performed creditably in the Provincial 1 day Challenge during the same period” the release states. Despite their withdrawal, Namibia reportedly continues to have a clear understanding of their international obligations. “Cricket Namibia’s intention is to use the openings in their fixtures list to arrange matches, whilst retaining the integrity of their national competitive calendar”. Extending their appreciation to Cricket South Africa and the provincial teams they have faced in the past, Cricket Namibia looks forward to the possibilities of re-engaging their South African counterparts in the near future.
