National youth games more than just games- Mwiya

Windhoek-The Chief Administrator of the Namibia Sports Commission, Freddy Mwiya, said preparations for the upcoming National Youth Games have entered the final phase. The games are set to take place from the 10th to 13th of May in Windhoek. NSC Chief Administrator Freddy Mwiya said the planning for the National Youth Games are approximately 75% done. They are now in the second phase, which centres around the innovation of the Games and which will include the opening and closing ceremonies plus the different categories, which the regions will compete in. He said the marketing team is pulling out all the stops to make sure that the country knows about the games. Fourteen regions, eleven sport codes and a one-thousand-eight-hundred athletes are expected to form part of the first ever national youth games and Mwiya noted at the end they want to make sure that there is more to the event than just games. They want to bring together the country's best junior athletes competing for top honours and bragging rights. " We want when the youngsters come to the city they don't just come for sport, but we need to integrate various activities to this games that at least they learn something out of it. That's why we are also going to approach Universities and Colleagues because that will be also an opportunity for exhibition part whereby they can also learn about various programs that are been offered by the University. Because we want when the children go back home they say yes we went for sport but the same time we also benefited from the games and other activities that are line up for the games" Mwiya said. Facilities at the various sports grounds where the games will take place are also already set up and Mwiya is appealing on corporate Namibia to come on board to help make the games a resounding success. For three days the junior sportsmen and women will compete in Athletics, Basketball, Football, Netball, Swimming and Volleyball.
