Sports infrastructure flooded yet again

Omusati Region-Sport activities in the northern parts of the country have once again minimised or completely come to a halt, due to the flooding of sport fields experienced over the past weeks. Following good rains in neighbouring Angola recently, Namibia's northern parts experienced a slight flood wave, which caused some Oshanas to overflow. Sport infrastructure was not spared either. In general, the lack of sporting infrastructure in remote areas of the country continues to be a concern, prompting young athletes to erect poles in open areas to ensure that they remain active sport participants. This year, some sport fields have already been submerged by flood water and Ogongo constituency councillor, Wilhem Iiyambo, says this should be a motivation for headmen to look into allocating land on higher ground for sports activities. ‘’It happens only because we don't have enough spaces, so we talk to the headman so that they can provide us with a good soccer fields. Like the other one at Omugongo now is under water so the people would like to play, but there is no other way. But they use to use the one at Unam Campus while the water subsides and they can come and play’’ said Ogongo Constituency Councillor Wilhelm Iiyambo. Iiyambo said, the youth in rural areas should be given an equal opportunity to participate in sports, as most of them also display talent needed to take the country's sport fraternity to the top. ‘’Sport is very important, healthy and creates a lot of friends, because if you are going to play with people from Oshana, everywhere you will have a lot of friends and one of the days, if you are talented you will have a chance to play for the country or other countries and you can earn a lot of money’’ he said. Despite the obvious challenges, this year's situation is way better than that of last year, which is when the majority of fields were flooded in comparison to this year where one finds a field or two that are still intact.
