The African Union is set to elect new Commissioners tomorrow. The positions of Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson and Commissioners of various portfolios will be up for grabs. Initially elections were supposed to take place today, but due to a heavy program, including the official opening of the Summit as well as a closed door session, the elections have now been shifted to Monday.The term of the current Commissioners comes to an end this year. The Chairperson of the Commission Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has decided not to seek a second term, opening the position for contest. The position of deputy chairperson will also become vacant. Candidates for the position of the Chairperson of the Commission are Botswana's Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi, Equatorial Guinea’s Foreign Affairs Minister Agapito Mba Mukoy and former Ugandan Vice President Dr Specioza Naigaga. The position of Deputy Chairperson is being contested by Yacin Elmi Bouh of Djibouti, Ibrahim Ali Hussein of Somalia, Dr. Victor Emmanuel Djomatchoua-Toko of Cameroon, and Thomas Kwesi Quartey from Ghana. The two positions are elected by the Heads of State through ballot, while the Commissioners are voted for by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of member states who make up the AU Executive Council. Commissioners are to be elected to the portfolios of Peace and Security, Political Affairs, Infrastructure and Energy, Rural Economy and Agriculture, Human Resources as well as Science and Technology. Namibia is not fielding any candidate this time around.
