Health Ministry announces outbreak of measles in Outapi District

The Ministry of Health and Social Services has announced an outbreak of measles in the Outapi District, Omusati Region. The outbreak was first detected on the 1st of June when ministry officials investigated 23 suspected measles cases as part of surveillance activities. The majority of cases, which is 14, are from a school in Olukekete Village, eight are from Tsandi, and one is from Okahao. According to the ministry, four cases are linked to a school near the Namibia/Angola border, while two cases originated from Omakange Village. The ages of those who tested positive range from five months to 12 years, all of whom are currently in a stable condition and recovering at home. Measles is a highly contagious infectious disease caused by a virus of the paramyxovirus family. Symptoms usually develop 10–12 days after exposure to an infected person and last 4–7 days. Initial symptoms typically include fever, often greater than 38°C, cough, runny nose, inflamed eyes and small white spots inside the cheeks.
