ICT Deputy Minister becomes the youngest winner of the United Nations Population Award

Deputy Minister of ICT Emma Theofelus has become the youngest winner of the United Nations Population Award. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) says Theofelus has won the award for her work advocating for women's empowerment and adolescent sexual and reproductive health in Namibia. It says Theofelus is among Africa's youngest cabinet ministers, who uses her perspective and experience to advocate for sexual and reproductive health. The UNFPA says the deputy minister has led Namibia's public communication campaign on COVID-19 prevention and tabled a motion lifting the tax on feminine hygiene products. It says Indonesia's BKKBN has won the institutional award. The agency promotes successful, innovative and rights-based family planning initiatives in the Republic of Indonesia. It says the agency has trained population experts, engaged with non-governmental and faith-based organisations on population issues, and developed programmes to assist families caring for older persons. The UN Population Award has been honouring individuals and institutions for their outstanding contributions to population, development and reproductive health since 1983.
