The case of Johan Meyer, accused of killing a nine-year-old Mariental girl, has been postponed to 23 November when he made his second appearance at the Mariental Magistrate's Court on Wednesday morning. The Prosecutor informed the presiding Magistrate that investigations into the matter are incomplete and more witness statements need to be taken.
Photo plans of the scene are also still outstanding. Witnesses the nbc News spoke to shortly after the incident in May, accused the Hardap Police of giving Meyer special treatment, by not taking a statement from the suspect, nor did they take pictures of the scene at the time. Johan Meyer faces a charge of culpable homicide after he gave chase and ran over the 9-year-old Hendrina Mupolo with his Land Cruiser.
The deceased, her mother and several others were allegedly collecting beans on the suspect's field without his consent. Meyer, who is married to the head prosecutor in the Hardap Region, was never arrested and handed himself over to the Mariental authorities two days after the incident, he was subsequently granted bail of N$3 000. No conditions are attached to his bail.
