Namibia to Chair SADC Troika

Namibia has reconsidered the decision to take over as chair of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security from South Africa. President Hage Geingob currently serves as the Deputy Chair of the Organ on behalf of Namibia. The country had earlier indicated that it would not assume the rotating role citing reasons such as finances and other factors. However, the SADC Organ Troika Summit which concluded a while ago in Kinshasa, DRC resulted in Namibia taking over the reins of the body which among others is tasked to maintain peace in the region. Speaking at the closing ceremony, the current chair and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said the SADC mission in Mozambique continues to play a vital role in pushing back insurgents and other terrorist groups in the Cabo Delgado Province. Regional efforts are also needed to bring an end to conflict in DRC’s northern regions, Ramaphosa told the summit. Clashes between DRC’s armed forces and rebel groups have led to more than 30 thousand people being displaced since May 2022. SADC’s Executive Secretary Elias Magosi described this as "worrying to the region".
