National Council to resume November 2022

The National Council has completed and adjourned its session until November this year. During the three weeks of business, the House considered and passed four bills referred to it by the National Assembly. These are the Access to Information, Metrology and the Combating of Domestic Violence Bills which were passed without amendments while the Combating of Rape Amendments Bill was passed with some changes. NC Chairperson Luca Muha commended the lawmakers for their dedication to both regional and national interests which demonstrated their leadership. Muha is hopeful that the laws will address the spate of domestic violence and rape in the country while the Metrology Bill will protect the trade market against low-quality and unsafe products. During this session, the National Council further considered and adopted the financial reports of eight Regional Councils for the 2021-2022 year. The reports are from the Ohangwena, Kavango West and East, Kunene, |Khomas, Oshana, Omusati and ||Kharas regions. The reports of the Otjozondjupa and Oshana regions were postponed until the next session, expected to resume in November, for debate. Muha further urged the Zambezi, Erongo, Omaheke, Hardarp and Oshikoto regions to prepare their reports to be tabled during the next session. At the same time, the Chairperson called on the various standing committees of the house to use to the recess period to conduct their oversight duties.
