NIDA employees survive trailer accident

About 67 employees of the Namibia Industrial Development Agency (NIDA) survived with serious to minor injuries when the trailer they were transported in overturned at Naute Dam on Tuesday afternoon. Namibian Police Force //Kharas Crime Investigations Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Chrispin Mubebo told NAMPA Tuesday night that the employees sustained serious to minor injuries and were all taken to the Keetmanshoop State Hospital for medical treatment. Mubebo said the 36-year-old tractor driver lost control of the tractor, causing the trailer that was transporting the employees from the plantation to their living quarters to overturn. The incident occurred around 17h20 and the passengers are aged between 20 and 46 years. “The driver of the tractor is unlicensed, only possessing a letter from the company to operate the tractor and the tractor and trailer are both unroadworthy,” Mubebo said. A case of contravening Act 22/1999 of the Road Traffic Act and reckless and or negligent driving has been opened against the driver. Simon Akwenye, the acting project manager at the Naute irrigation scheme, which NIDA manages, could not comment on Wednesday as he was locked in meetings. Police investigations in the matter continue. -NAMPA
