Novanam/Lalandi Strike Comes to and End

Novanam and Lalandi company and the Namibian Seamen and Allied Workers Union have agreed to end the nearly one-month-long workers' strike at Luderitz and Walvisbay. Workers downed tools three weeks ago after the parties reached a deadlock on salary negotiations. The parties have since been engaged in collective bargaining to negotiate on improved terms and conditions of employment for the hake quota years 2021/22 2022/23 and 2023 /24 starting on 1st November on each quota year. According to the agreement, permanent and temporary workers who are land-based will receive a salary increase of 6 percent for this year, with N$420 per month for housing which is expected to increase during the 2022\2023 financial year to about N$500 per month. Sea-based workers reported back to work on the 17th of August, while factory employees will resume work on the day of the offloading of the first vessel. The agreement was signed by Immanuel Namukomba on behalf of Novanam and Petrus Shiyandja on behalf of the union.
