Swakopmund murder accused appears in court

A 26-year-old man accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend and her lover told the Swakopmund Magistrate's Court he did it out of self-defence. Immanuel Beukes was arrested on Saturday after he allegedly broke into the ex-girlfriend's shack at DRC, stabbed her 10 times and then killed the boyfriend with the same knife. The victim, 25-year-old McLean is recovering in the state hospital. Beukes made his first court appearance on Monday and was charged with housebreaking with intent to murder, attempted murder and murder. Magistrate Conchita Olivier could not accept the accused's guilty plea because she says he did not admit any intention to kill or stab the victims. Beukes admitted in court that he stabbed Kamati Sylvanus Kamati several times in response to his attack on him with a knife. Beukes further claimed he stabbed Gawanas by accident when she tried to stop the altercation between the two men. According to the accused, he was still dating Gawanas and he was surprised to find someone else sleeping inside the shack when he broke in. The state however objected to this argument saying Beukes intentionally went to the shack to stab and kill the victims because he was not in a relationship with Gawanas at the time. Bail was not granted due to the seriousness of the charges and that it would not be in the interest of justice. His case was postponed to 10 November.
