Vaccination of children to be done with legal and informed consent from parents or guardians

Vaccination of children, aged 12 to 17, will only be done with legal and informed consent from parents or guardians. Dr Kalumbi Shangula announced at the 36th COVID-19 Public briefing that this process will however be done in a phased approach, starting with those who are most at increased risk of severe illness, hospitalization and death. Among the vaccines available in Namibia, the Pfizer vaccine is recommended for the age group 12 to 17, and all adolescents in this age group are encouraged to go for vaccination. Currently, a total of 343 482 persons or 22.9% of the eligible population have received the first dose of COVID-19 vaccination and 279 765 persons or 18.6% are fully vaccinated. Dr Shangula is however worried about the decline in those going for vaccination, despite the country having sufficient doses of COVID-19 vaccines, with more doses expected to be delivered during the months of November and December.
