The 2019 African Youth Chess championships got underway in Windhoek on Saturday. Players from 16 African countries includes Algeria, Angola, Botswana, Egypt, Kenya, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe and host Namibia are competing in their respective age categories in the weeklong championship. Welcoming the visitors was the newly elected president of the Namibia Chess federation, Charles Eichab. "We as hosting federation will ensure that you will taste the warmth of our friendship and helpfulness, The LOC is also ensuring that we offer you the players and guest the most optimum conditions from a sporting point of view to ensure that you go through the event without the unnecessary distractions of life" Eichab said. The patron of Namibian Chess Federation is pleased that the African Chess Confederation of Africa has granted the hosting rights to Namibia and to see that the game is on a rapid growth, with the number of continental tournaments increasing as well as the level of competition. "Events such as the African Youth Chess Championship play a key role in overall development as it creates unforgettable experiences for our future leaders, Africa's most unmistakable resource to date, is the mind of an African Child. In addition to the other development and social instruments, Chess can help harness and safeguard this sources" Kapofi said. He urged the players to remain focused throughout the games and make their countries proud while at the same time make time to make friends and enjoy their stay. Among those who will be defending their African titles are Namibia's own Ottillie Hinda who was crowned the African champion at a young age of eight. The youngsters are looking forward to the competition. The championship is taking place at the Windhoek country club and the public is invited to support the participants.
