Athletes turn to TikTok in efforts to keep busy

With the lockdown being enforced in Namibia, a lot of people are finding it increasingly challenging to keep busy. In this scenario, athletes are no exception. The countrywide lockdown due to the outbreak of Covid -19 did not only limit the movement of people, but has also caused boredom and anxiety amongst many. The call centre for Covid-19 information even expressed concern that some members of the public are misusing the hotline due to boredom. Social media enthusiasts, including athletes, have now resorted to creative ways to keep themselves entertained. A video-sharing social networking service called TikTok is becoming more and more popular among young people and those NBC Sport spoke to said it keeps them sane during these trying times. 19-year-old Cassia Sharpley is a young UNAM rugby player, who constantly comes up with new and creative videos to not just keep herself busy but to also entertain her followers. "TikTok has really helped me to distress. It has been killing time, it’s a fun place to just let go and embrace yourself. TikTok has been helping me mentally and keeps me in touch with what I did before lockdown. It's amazing. I love TikTok during lockdown” Sharpley said. Sharpley believes that the mental aspect of the lockdown has been quite challenging to a lot of athletes with very little to no outside activity, which they are used to otherwise. She explained that she sees the lockdown as a reset button and a chance to reboot nonetheless9.
