B AND C SPORT CODES RECEIVE FUNDING FOR ADMIN

A three-day meeting was held at the Namibia Sports Commission to discuss fund allocations to different sports codes. At the meeting, Chief Sports Administrator at the Namibia Sports Commission, Freddie Mwiya together with different umbrella bodies and federations, discussed various issues surrounding different sport codes, including their finances. Part of the discussion was how much money each sport code will need to run their programmes. According to Mwyia, the meeting was organised to make all sport affiliates understand the budget allocation. N$1,6 million was divided into the three categories for administration purposes. Code A, which includes Athletics, Boxing, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Netball, Rugby and Volleyball received N$50 000 each. B codes received N$ 30 000 and C- codes N$15 000, whereas previously they only received funding upon request. The major sports codes are in category A and because most have participated internationally already, they received the highest amount. On development purposes in this category, Football received the highest amount compared to other categories, with N$3, 3 million. Mwiya said for category B and C, N$900 000 was allocated, mainly for international participation based on merit. He however said it did not necessarily mean that whenever athletes needed to go and participate in events, they could just get up and leave. Mwiya said he was pleased to work with a team that understands the commission’s vision. He further stated that he is looking forward to working with their affiliates and umbrella bodies and that it is the commission’s prerogative to grow the sport in the country.
