Categorisation of codes comes with benefit- Mwiya

The Chief Administrator of the Namibia Sport Commission, Freddy Mwiya, said there are benefits for sport codes that have been put into specific categories. Last year the Namibia Sports Commission resorted to putting sport codes in three categories, namely National, Priority and Developmental Codes - something the Chief Administrator of the Namibia Sports Commission, Freddy Mwiya, said was long overdue. Football with its appeal to the masses, Rugby which is ever-present at the World Cup and Netball which is slowly getting back to its former glory days are classified as national codes. In the priority codes there is Athletics which includes track and field, marathon and para athletics, Cycling who is becoming the fastest growing sport in the country and Wrestling with its continued presence at African Championships. Mwiya also explained that apart from these two categories, 15 sport codes are making up the developmental category and that they are also doing very well. Then there is also an open category which includes the majority of the other codes. According to Mwiya, for the top performers and codes there are other benefits apart from the monetary support the Commission is giving. “The MOU that we have sign with countries look about the sport codes that must be included and be part and parcel of the three categories. We got an MOU with Senegal and we very happy that we got three sports codes Athletics, Wrestling and also Karate. At the end of the day there will be that exchange programme” Mwiya said. The categorisation of the sport codes started in 2018 and will run till 2020 which makes it a four year cycle.
