Last weekend in Windhoek, City United were crowned the champions of a Gender-Based Violence soccer tournament, after they defeated team Willem Eleven 4-3 on penalties, following a 0-0 draw in regular time. The tournament organised by Monica Gender Violence Solution - named after Namibia's First Lady Monica Geingos - was held to raise awareness about violence against women and children, which has become a grave of concern to Namibians from all walks of life. According to police statistics, Namibia records over 200 GBV cases every month. The event was preceded by a march through the streets of the Havana informal settlement, After a 0-0 draw, City United who beat Willem Eleven 4-3 on penalties in the final, were presented with a trophy and cash prize by Khomas Regional Police Commander Joseph Shikongo. “I feel it is about time we act against GBV as it has now become a national concern. It is a critical issue with statistics going up every year” Shikongo said. Individual prizes were also handed over to those who performed well in their respective positions over the weekend-long event.
