Swakopmund-Coastal Motocross riders participated in a three-day training workshop, which ended on Sunday. The event was hosted by the Dean Hoffman Motocross school, and held at the Swakopmund Motocross track. Dean Hoffman is a professional coach from South Africa and during the past ten years has travelled internationally to many British and World Championship races, where he worked closely with many top riders, developing riding and coaching skills. This is Hoffman's third year to visit Namibia and give coaching courses. Ten riders, the youngest being 8 years old, and the oldest 32 years of age had the opportunity to be part of the 3-day training school. As MX is a very intense sport, skills development for riders is a must, because it leads to better skills and less injuries. Riders at the training were taught different techniques to upgrade their skills in body position, braking techniques, cornering, starts, jumping skills, and riding ruts. Hoffman was impressed with all riders, especially Liam Gilchrist, currently the fastest 125cc rider in Namibia. Gilchrist is taking part in the Nationals in South Africa and also rides in the Western Cape regional competitions at the Cape Town Zone 7 series. “We are also doing a school in December, there is a race in Swakop, just before Christmas or just after, so I will do a three day training school again, which normally consist of 15 riders, so we will do a second course just before the race. Hopefully I will be able to re-evaluate these guys and hope for some improvement”Hoffman said. Swakopmund Motocross promoters are trying to grow the sport of Motocross at the coast, and believe that good riders will pull in others to join, as well as get larger crowds to witness MX events.
