The dream of Jonas Shilongo, who wishes to one-day play for the Brave Warriors, got closer to being realised after he received a prosthetic leg last week. The Namibia Sports Commission, as part of their corporate social responsibility, officially handed over a prosthetic leg, worth N$140 000‬ to 13-year-old Shilongo in Swakopmund. After a video of Shilongo playing football with his friends while on crutches went viral on social media earlier this year, proceeds from the Namibia Annual Sports Awards launch, activation funds and other donations were put together, to help Shilongo. Chief administrator of the Namibia Sport Commission Freddie Mwiya said this Community Inspirational Award was presented to Shilongo during the Namibia Annual Sports Awards earlier this year, but the process of the leg was only completed recently. “The commission aims to plough back into young people who are passionate about sports, regardless of its limited budget” Mwiya said. Doctor Jeannie Schoeman from New Life Medical Suppliers and Greenvine and his team in Swakopmund will continue assisting Shilongo. He is scheduled to return for a follow-up in Jan 2020 and every 3 months afterwards. “He added that Shilongo’s fitting went well and said he would be able to start rehabilitation so he could use his new leg soon.Therapy will go on for as long as it takes to ensure that the leg functions well and that he is comfortable using his new leg. We are just happy to have been part of the team realising Shilongo’s dream of walking with both legs like any other person, as well as that of playing football,” he said. The team is still in Swakopmund as Shilongo is being closely monitored and trained to walk with his new leg.
