"It's a dream come true". That's how Namibia Hockey Union president Marc Nel has described the three-million-dollar sponsorship from MTC. Mobile communications giant MTC last week announced a record sponsorship totalling more than 67 million Namibia dollars, for some sport codes and non-sporting events in the country to benefit. Hockey is one of the seven codes and president of the Hockey Union Marc Nel said they have been engaging MTC since 2016 and in 2020 their partnership is taking shape yet again. “NHU would like to extend their gratitude to MTC for believing in our senior men's and women's teams. For a long time, we have been looking for a sponsorship for our senior Hockey teams this dream has just become a reality” Nel said. The Hockey president explained that the senior national sides had it tough in recent years, as they were nowhere in the world rankings by 2015. He however proudly announced that the women's side is currently ranked 11th in Indoor Hockey and in the top 40 in Outdoor Hockey, while the men are 17th in Indoor Hockey and 57th in Outdoor Hockey. This, Nel revealed, is a great achievement. ”I can only say we can only participate internationally if we have the finances. In the past we had to be very selective to which tournaments we can go. This sponsorship enables our men and women's teams participate even more competitions, This is also a recognition that Namibia's Hockey's development program is also successful. Without development we would never have achieve this goals and therefore again MTC” he added said. With stage four of the national state of emergency opening up many sectors, training for national teams and clubs started past weekend. Meanwhile, the Bank Windhoek National Indoor Hockey League will resume later this month, whereas the Bank Windhoek National Outdoor Hockey League will be played later this year.
