With COVID-19 cases reaching unprecedented heights the world over, there are still no clear guidelines as to when the sporting world will be able to reclaim its space. Many global competitions have already been cancelled indefinitely or postponed, and the pandemic's effect on Namibian sports has also been undeniable. This was discussed on Friday at the COVID-19 communication centre in Windhoek. With the introduction of Stage 2 of the Namibian state of emergency yesterday, restrictions on contact sport and sport events in general have dealt another huge blow to sports competitions and seasonal sport in Namibia. Speaking as a panellist at the COVID-19 communication centre , Deputy Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service Emma Kantema-Gaomas explained that the ministry has also been affected in terms of its strategic plans and policies to improve and develop sport in the country. "For as much as we are faced with the Covid 19 Pandemic, for as much as it possesses challenge we believe from our side to see opportunities to enhance our policies to respond to the needs of the athletes" Kantema-Gaomas said. At the same venue, Namibia National Olympic Committee Secretary General Joan Smit said that since this year was an Olympic year and most athletes had worked hard in preparation to qualify for the Olympics games, they can only hope for the best as they heavily rely on the international federations and government for guidance. "We continue to rely on the world health organization concerning potential adaptations to organizations of mass gatherings. We also very much rely on the guidance of the international federations,, the International Olympic committee and Commonwealth federation" Smit said. As the only representative athlete on the panel, Dan Craven also participated in the discussion. He was one of the athletes who qualified for the African Championship in Mauritius, but had to see his dream disappear. Despite personal setbacks, he was full of praise for government. "Social media is the one place we show the people that we are following the rules that the government has set out. What the government has done was absolutely amazing shutting down early, shutting down hard and fast and that is why we in the next face and doing better" Craven said. Sport in the country faces an uncertain future. Athletes have tried nonetheless to make use of any opportunity to stat fit as they wait for things to return to normal.
