The first King of the Ring kickboxing and boxing championship was held on Saturday at the coastal town of Swakopmund at the Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre. The championship provided some good action as the Namibia Ring Contact Fighting Arts International took the initiative to invite kickboxers and boxers from the Erongo region and other regions to be part of the championship. The King of the Ring championship was sanctioned by the Namibian Kickboxing Federation in conjunction with the Erongo Region Boxing Board. The event started with kickboxing fights, followed by junior and senior boxing bouts, and ended with three King Of The Ring title fights. Also at the event, Erongo Region's prolific women's boxer Monika Kambonde showed off her boxing skills to the applause of the crowd. The 2019 Junior Sports Man of Year, Delano Muller, with the money he won at the recently held Namibia Annual Sport Awards, bought boxing gloves, which he handed over to all the boxing winners at the championship. Muller will be doing outreach to other regions towards the end of the year as well. Apart from Kambonde's good display and Muller's acts of kindness, the main focus of the night was on the three title belt fights, which consisted of three, three minute rounds. The first title belt fight was between Samuel Joseph and Charlie Nangolo, which Joseph won by a unanimous decision. Kick Boxing champions, Muller and Lesly !Hoaeb also showed off their boxing skills and won their title fights against Robert Shimweneni and Kauta Marius respectively - both fights won by unanimous decisions. The three title belt winners afterwards met former boxing champ, Harry Simon, and had the opportunity to shake hands with him. The aim of the King of the Ring Championship was to promote the sport of boxing by joining forces with Kickboxing. The championship is set to be turned into an annual event in the future.
