As previously reported on, team sports are particularly hard hit by COVID 19 and Hockey is no exception. With the lockdown extended until early May, athletes are urged to stick with routines until new development can happen. The President of the Namibia Hockey Union Marc Nel said there were only a few weekends left of playing fixtures to complete the Bank Windhoek National Hockey league, before the State of the Emergency was declared after the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. The Saints Hockey club have been the frontrunners in both the men and women's league. "As the from the announcement by the President of Republic of Namibia, the Namibia Hockey Union decided to suspend the Bank Windhoek Indoor National Hockey league for the time being. We still have three weekends left of fixtures, this will commence as soon as we are back again to normal. Further more all international games has been postponed by the international Hockey Federation and by the continental Hockey federation" Nel said. Competitions that were affected are the Indoor African Cup, the senior African qualifiers for both men and women, the Junior African cup for both men and women and also the Indoor men's Test series between Namibia and South Africa. Nel explained that all competitions will be reviewed by the end of April and new dates will be communicated going forward. COVID-19 did not only halt play, but also the construction of the much anticipated artificial turf which was expected to be completed by the end of April. Nel said the turf is approximately 65% completed at this stage. All the civil works, the leveling, the tarring, the drainage and paving around the turf are completed, while only the shock pads and actual plastic grass mat, electrical score board and players and official dugout needs to be put in for competition. The Hockey president urged all players, coaches, officials, club members and hockey supporters to be committed and follow the rules and regulations as communicated by Government and the health specialists. "I wish everybody all the best and please stay home and be safe"he said. He said strong and fit players are needed for the remaining year's hockey activities as soon as everything is back to normal.
