Horse racing marks its return to the turf at Okahandja

The past weekend marked the first appearance of the fast-growing sport of Horse racing since the Corona virus outbreak, which interrupted sporting activities in the country. The Horse racing turf at the Garden Town of Okahandja hosted the return of Horse racing on Saturday, as Namibia gradually eases the state of emergency regulations in stage 3. The event however was not business as usual as it was not open to the public. Horse racing is a non-contact sport and organisers took the opportunity to host the race specifically for the horse owners. “We have taken all the necessary precautions in line with the government regulations regarding Covid-19. Today's race, we only have the Horse owners and handlers. We did not allow outside people. At the end of the day it is better to be safe” Mannes Hendricks said. Despite all obvious obstacles, Hendricks was pleased with the ongoing efforts. Namibia Sports Commission Chief administrator Freddy Mwiya also paid a courtesy visit to the event for inspection before giving the go-ahead. “You could see when entering through the gate they are sanitizing everyone and I also encouraged them to have a register at the gate. It is just for tracing purposes in a case of any infection. So things are going well” Mwiya said. Mwiya advised other non-contact sport codes to follow suit by adhering to the State of emergency regulations through limiting the number of people present per event to 50, wearing face masks and sanitizing hands. Organisers are adapting to the new normal of hosting events without spectators.
