Namibian boxer Jonas Junias Jonas had been acquitted of rape charges in Rio. This was confirmed by the Namibia National Olympic Committee, alongside other developments concerning the young athlete. At a press conference on Wednesday, the news regarding Jonas' acquittal was confirmed by the president of the Namibia National Olympic Committee, Abner Xoagub, who also revealed that Jonas will soon be sent to a high performance centre for adequate preparation. Four years down the line, Jonas - who was charged with allegedly raping a housemaid in the Athletes Village during the 2016 Olympic games - is a free man. The judges on his case ultimately applied the Statute of Limitations of the State Punitive Code and upheld the decision of the Court of Torcedor E Dos Grandes Eventos to dismiss the appeal. Xoagub provided details as per the outcome of the case. “Amongst other, the judges of the 8 criminal judges chamber of the court of justice rely on two cases which are previously similar to the one of Jonas have decided that the judges clearly enormously also rejected the complainant's evidence. So the case was throughout and Jonas was basically clear off all the criminal charges” Xoagub said. As Tokyo 2020 is near, the NNOC promised to send Jonas to the high-performance centre to prepare adequately for the games. “Now that he has qualified, we will work with the coach and the National Boxing Federation to see to that we take Jonas to the best possible high-performance centre to expose him to the best possible sparring partners” Xoagub added. Jonas himself was not present at the press briefing due to a personal commitment.
