As most sport codes around the world are still inactive due to the COVID-19 pandemic, new and innovative ways have to be found to participate in competitions. Karate is one of the sport codes that is taking on the online world right now. DataSport has introduced a considerably new way of online sports competitions, which are called "eTournaments" - completely transforming the way sportsmen and women can challenge themselves. In e-tournaments, karate students can, for example, compete against professional and amateur athletes from all around the world. e-tournaments make competing simpler, easier, and more cost effective. Walvisbay-based karate student Katlin Martin is one such Karateka that is competing in e-tournaments. While on a break from her studies in South Africa, Martin already competed in seven tournaments and explained why tournaments like these are important to her as a Karateka. “During the pandemic that we are going through, the online competitions are keeping sports alive. I think it’s a great thing, because it keeps everybody busy and into their sport. Usually when people lose connection with their sports that’s when they dwell off the wrong path. So I feel like keeping everybody connected to the sport is a great way to keep everything alive and positive” Martins said. Martin's father and coach, Leonard Martin also says that these days, students in all sport codes must take on competitions that are available online like the karate e-tournaments to be ready for when things get back to normal. “It’s not only us. There’s Cycling , Motorsport, they all have virtual races. So if you are into that sport and your sport is providing that option go for it . It can only make you better and keep you in competition with the rest of the world . If you are not going to do that , you are going to lose out big time” Leonard Martins said. In the seven tournaments Martin competed in, she already won one silver and one bronze medal.
