Self-taught gymnast Stephanie Katusuva began her sports-related journey at her new school, Windhoek Gymnasium on Monday. The 12-year-old previously received a sponsorship from Olympic Solidarity through the Namibia National Olympic Committee. Katusuva, who hails from Oshiteyi village in the Omusati region, got a warm welcome from both the principal of Windhoek Gymnasium's senior primary school Dr Danie Theusnissen as well as the school's Managing Director Colette Rickert in the presence of Namibia Sports Commission chief administrator Freddy Mwiya. The pupil received the sports-related scholarship to the school, after a video of her performing gymnastics, was posted on Facebook and NBC did a follow-up story. This caught the attention of the community and the Namibia Sports Commission. Having come from humble beginnings, the 12-year-old's dream is to eventually become a gymnastics coach, so she can assist less privileged students. “I was very excited and scared at the same time.There are people that are not of my age in the hostel and people were just looking at me” Katusuva said. She strongly encouraged other children not to give up on their dreams, “I want to tell others not to give up on their dreams and continue what they are doing even if no one believes in them” she added. Windhoek Gymnasium's Managing Director Colette Rieckert was delighted to have such a young and talented individual at the school. “We were very happy to welcome Steffi for the first time at the school. I saw her after school again and she said everything went well and everything was good and she enjoyed the first day at school” Rieckert said. Katusuva will join 30 other gymnasts for training, which is scheduled to start this week.
