Mountain Bike event at the coast sees good turnout

Swakopmund-The second event of the FNB Mountain Bike coastal league was recently held at the Rossmund Golf Club, just outside of Swakopmund and saw a good turnout. The FNB mountain bike league’s aim is to bring awareness of outdoor sport activities to learners between the ages of 8 to 18. Pupils participating in the league generate points for their respective schools over the course of four events, culminating in an annual award presented to the school with the most points. Learners are required to participate in at least three of the four events in order to qualify for final championship points. The goal is to include as many schools as possible, from all parts of Namibia. Upon completion of the league, a Namibian team will then be selected to participate in Madagaliesberg, South Africa in the SA Schools final planned for early October. “The future for cycling is the kids, and we must start somewhere with them and this is the ideal place that they can compete against each other, and from here on we will see where the go. We are happy as we grow in numbers every year, slowly but surely”said event organiser Alfons Kiesewetter. The upcoming Namibian finals scheduled for May, hold the promise of a great turnout, with the learner riders using this event as their last chance to increase their school’s points, as well as their own.
