MTC ends contractual agreement with NPL

MTC's Chief of Human Capital and Corporate Affairs Tim Ekandjo announced this week that the three-year sponsorship of N$15.9 million - which was supposed to go to the Namibia Premier League – had been ended due to nonexistence of the entity. MTC was the only sponsor of the NPL from 2006 to 2020. Considering this, Tim Ekandjo said that as a company they are proud to have been part of this initiative, which paved the way for football in the country. They however chose not to comment on the affairs of the football-governing bodies in the country. Speaking at the media presser on Tuesday, Ekandjo said due to the latest development at the NFA congress this past weekend, they felt they needed to act. “We have been informed that the NPL has been expelled and therefore is not a member of the NFA anymore. As the result of the expulsion all the obligations we had contractually with them became null and void” Ekandjo said. In total, MTC was sponsoring football in Namibia for 19 years, with about N$150 million invested in sponsorships, which allowed for development in Namibian football. But the challenges were unfortunately plenty. “All we are saying is that we wanted this league to start for almost 12 months. This league was supposed to end in May and there is no end to the football squabbles. To be quite frank, we have ended our relationship with the NPL” he explained. Ekandjo however mentioned that MTC will still be committed to football with the announcement of the sponsorship of the Dr Hage Cup, the NFA cup and the Hopsol Youth League.
