The NAKU all styles national junior and senior karate championships were held in Walvisbay over the weekend. They served as national trials for the 2020 calendar year. Over 250 athletes competed in the two day championships in the all Kata and all Kumite devisions. The championships not only provided a platform for athletes to demonstrate their skills, but also resulted in the selection of the national team with the purposes of developing the sport in Namibia. “This is the highlight of the Namibian Karate calendar. Following this, athletes will then be selected for the national squad that will be participating next year. We will also have the WKF junior world championships taking place in Chilly” D'Alton said. Cornelius D'Alton, president of the Namibia Karate Union also said that he is very happy with the outcome of the championships. “I am very happy with the outcome, about the amount of entries received. Very happy with the quality of the event and the competition in general. A thumps up for growth of Karate in Namibia” he said. NAKU hopes with the help of sponsors in the future, to send more athletes to participate in international tournaments and that they also can implement a National Karate League which will allow for more participation opportunities and better tracking of athletes performances all year round.
