Namibia bans sport events in light of Corona outbreak

Namibia has joined forces with the rest of the world by suspending all domestic sport as well international participation due to the coronavirus outbreak. This was announced by the Chief Administrator of the Namibia Sports Commission Freddy Mwiya in an interview with NBC Sport on Monday. Considering the safety of athletes in light of the corona pandemic, the Namibia Sports Commission was left with no choice but to ban all sporting events with immediate effect. The ban comes three days after the initial announcement by President Hage Geingob to ban public gatherings. “All national events, being clubs, federations, Unam will be suspended in line with the 30-day notice that was given. All international games either to be hosted home or for teams to travel outside the country will also be suspended. Because we know the disease is real and we need to look about the health aspect of our athletes which is more crucial” Mwiya said. A Tennis event that was scheduled to be played between Namibia and South Africa in Windhoek has been called off. Mwiya urged athletes to train in isolation as opposed to groups as a preventive measure to guard against the virus.
