The Chief Administrator of the Namibia Sports Commission, Freddy Mwiya, said the National Youth Games which were scheduled to take place from 28 April - 02 May at Swakopmund have been postponed. New dates are yet to be announced. The National Youth Games, which saw their maiden edition hosted in Windhoek in 2018, did not take place last year as they were postponed for Namibia to be in sync with the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Games that are taking place every second year. However with the AUSC Region 5 Council Games, which were planned for December, now also postponed. Mwiya said they were left with no choice, but to also move the second edition of the Youth Games to another date. "We cannot specify the date when it will take place, but we are going to wait come June/July, when the announcement of the Region 5 would come out for next year then we are going to work out our programme base on the calendar that will be given to us" Mwiya said. With most regions already past their trials and working on finalising their teams for the Youth Games, Mwiya believes everyone should take the current measures seriously and keep preparing. "The virus is real. I think is good for people to understand why a directive was given and why the state of emergency was given. The health of our athletes or the health of Namibians very crucial"he added. Also affected are the AUSC Region 5 Marathon and the RASA Awards set for the month of May in South Africa and Eswathini respectively
