Windhoek-The Okahandja Military School team, who won the North West First Division and was supposed to be promoted to the Namibia Premier League, has been handed over to the community of Okahandja. This latest development means that the team - which will from now on be known as Okahandja United - will play in the NPL when the new season kicks off on the first weekend of October. After winning the league, the Okahandja Military School's promotion to the Namibia Premier League could not officially be confirmed, because the Namibian Defence Force already has a team in the same league. This team comes in form of the Mighty Gunners from Otjiwarongo and based on NFA's statutes in article 18 point 3 and a FIFA's directive, ownership of two or more clubs by the same entity is prohibited. Considering this prohibition, the Okahandja Military School transferred its ownership to Okahandja United on behalf of the town's community - a move the NFA could not oppose as per the law. “The NFA has decided to allow and endorse the promotion of the Military School under new ownership and name to the NPL” Rukoro confirmed. The news was welcomed by Okahandja Mayor Congo Hindjou, who orchestrated the transfer of the ownership of the Military School to Okahandja United. “We held meetings that resulted in this. We took over everything, the players and we are now looking for a coach. This is for Okahandja and we want to unite all in the town, hence we came up with the name Okahandja United”Hindjou said. The new team will play a friendly against the reigning NPL champions African Stars at Okahandja on Saturday and will be managed by prominent former players and business personalities at the town.
