By: Lesley Tjiuzeza The Namibia Sport Commission is in a cash flow crisis with sport codes yet to receive their annual grants for administration and development. Acting Chief Sport Administrator Walter Haseb explained the current operating procedures. “Currently we are applying for finances to disperse to the Sport Umbrella bodies on a monthly basis but there are no guarantees that what we request we will be given. So we operate on the funds that we are given.”Said Haseb Sport commission receives it annual funding form the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service to distribute to all 50 sport codes in the country. “The Line Ministry dictates how we should distribute these fund.”added Haseb Benard Kaanjuka the Deputy Director of sport in the Ministry of sport, Youth and National service admitted that the reason why the Sport commission is requesting money on a monthly basis is because it’s the current stastus quo in the Gorvernment. “All government agencies and Ministries are required to apply for funding on a monthly basis and the NSC are no different.” Said Kaanjuka. Haseb also said that the possibility of football to receive N$9 Million they requested is nearly impossible for this financial year. “The football bosses spoke to us but like any other process the budget have to be submitted to the line ministry before it goes to finance. That request can only be considered in the next financial year.” He elaborated. The Sports Commission last year got N$20 Million from the Ministry of National Service Youth and Sport to distribute to sport codes. This year, there will be an increase of about N$18 million. The Sport Commission’s Mission is to Provide quality services to Namibian Sport Stakeholders in order to ensure a sustainable and results driven environment butunder the current financial conditions that may not happen. Amid looming drought in the country, Finance minister Calle Schlettwein is expected to table a mid-year budget review for 2016 in the National Assembly by the end of October and maybe, Just maybe Sport might be rescued.
