Mynahardt Kauanivi in the men’s 42 km division, and Alina Armas in the 42 km women’s race, emerged as the winners of this year's Rössing Marathon on Saturday in Swakopmund. They achieved respective times of 2 hours, 20 minutes and 58 seconds, and 2 hours, 41 minutes and 2 seconds. The 2020 Rössing Marathon saw a record number of entries, with more then 700 runners and walkers competing in 42 km, 21 km , and 10 km categories, as well as a 10 km uranium relay and a 5 km fun walk. All proceeds collected from the entries and donations for the 5km fun walk and the 10km uranium relay event for invited uranium companies will go to the Cancer Association of Namibia. This year's invited uranium companies in the region competed in a 10km uranium relay event, which was aimed at building friendships among the industry's employees. All eyes were however on the full and half marathon athletes, and with perfect running conditions the pack quickly gained momentum. The 21 km half marathon event was renamed to the 'Frank Slabbert Half Marathon' in honour of long-time race director, Frank Slabbert, who supervised his 28th consecutive Rössing's Marathon last year. The biggest chunk of runners competed in the10 km race. The 42 km full marathon runners set a good pace early in the race, but nothing could stop Mynhardt Kauanivi from winning his second Rossing Uranium marathon, after he already claimed the title once in 2014. In the ladies 42 km categories, Alina Armas had a lone run and was not challenged, thus easily winning the marathon for the 5th time. Rössing Uranium marathon organizers and management were very pleased with the 29th edition and with the theme, “Your health, your life”, aimed at promoting healthy habits and supporting positive lifestyles in the community. "In total, more than N$100 000‬ were awarded to the winners in various categories on the day, with the full marathon winners each walking away with N$10 000 in prize money, as well as a development bonus of N$20 000 each" Johan Coetzee the managing director of Rio Tinto Rossing Uranium said.
