Rugby Premier League to possibly kick off in August

The Namibia Rugby Union’s council voted to play some form of Rugby this year still, this decision was made during the NRU’s AGM which was held in Windhoek recently. NRU president Corrie Mensah however expressed his concern on the matter. In an NBC exclusive interview Mensah expressed his concern surrounding the return of Rugby in stage 4. " It's a very though call for Rugby, It's not a matter of just what we will do on the field. There are a lot of measures and we could not actually compromise in unity with regards to how we will approach this face" Mensah said. With the council not all in agreement on how exactly Rugby can possibly return to the field of play, the NRU is planning on implementing its own set of measures in addition to that of the government, and by extension, the Namibia Sports Commission. These measurements will include terms of participation for the clubs in the league to ensure the safety of all. " It's not only the measures, but it's the cost there of too, Some of these things are very costly to enforce and also you need additional man power. Take for instance the social distancing issue you have to employ some more securities at your games and that is costly" he stressed. With Mensah expressing his concerns and thoughts on the way forward, he added that council decided they still want to play rugby this year - come what may. " I rightfully told them if there is the slightest transgression from clubs and or they can not comply with the measures in place, there would be an irrupt stop immediately from my office side. I will not allow them to continue putting any person or athlete or themselves at risk " he said. Apart from Mensah making himself clear in regards to the severity of the situation, some clubs are trying to come up with suggestions to try and get back onto the field as soon as possible. Other clubs such as Westerns Suburbs and United are among those who voted against the notion of having rugby return this year. They expressed worry surrounding the players and the families they have to return to after the games, and also said they were afraid of losing players to other clubs due to them not willing to participate in the proposed competitions. The suggested dates for the league to kick off are either the 1st or the 8th of August with a round robin format concluding with semi-finals and finals by the end of October.
