The offices of Special Olympics Namibia, situated at the Football for Hope centre at the Katutura Youth Complex, are in a deplorable state. Past break-ins, a vandalised structure and the overall need for renovation make work at the centre impossible at the moment. The Katutura Football for Hope centre which in the past featured a computer lab, an artificial football turf and a public health services area, is one of the 20 Football for Hope Centres build in Africa as part of the 2010 FIFA world cup legacy. The centre, which is run by Special Olympics Namibia and was meant to enhance the lives of athletes, has been vandalised on several occasions, as national director Emilia Nzuzi explains. The majority of things are stolen, Even the wire for the electricity that supply the lights at the Football pitch is stolen. A lot of things need to be done to renew and renovate the facility” she said. While there had been an earlier agreement between Special Olympics Namibia, the Ministry of Sport and FIFA not to fence off the facilities for the public to have free access, this decision had to be revised following the acts of vandalism. “They also realised that centre is at risk, because previous staff members have been robbed off their laptops while in office. A security guard was also killed on the premises, that's how this place is unsafe” she added. Nzuzi is appealing to the public for assistance to renovate and fence off the facilities, so they can move forward with activities. They also need their staff members to come back to the office to assist athletes.
