Sports Act Reviewed

By: Katrina Gowases Several adjustments were proposed to the Namibia Sports Act of 2003 during a two-day review held at Von Bach Dam near Okahandja over the weekend . The review was aimed at fast-tracking the professionalisation of Namibian Sport, creating funding opportunities for development and elite sport as well as to establish a national anti-doping organisation. It also served to regulate recreational activities and reduce the terms of office of people serving as executives on sports federations and umbrella bodies. From the 30 invited members, more than twenty sports administrators from the line ministry, the Namibia Sports Commission and affiliated members were present to make amendments to the Act. There will be a consultation this week between the Sports Commission and the directorate of sport on the weekend’s input. Thereafter the amended document with the recommendations will be submitted to the legal drafters of the Ministry of Justice. The Bill will then go through the consultation process before tabling in the National Assembly. The deadline for the finalisation of the document is set for the end of the year, if there are no delays in the process.
