The Chief Administrator of the Namibia Sports Commission, Freddy Mwiya, said that the 2020 edition of the annual Sports Awards might have to be postponed to a later date, due to prevailing circumstances. The 2020 edition of the annual Sports Awards was initially set to take place on the 27th of October at a venue which was still to be decided. However, the Chief Administrator of the Namibia Sport Commission, Freddy Mwiya told nbc sport that hosting the event on that date won't be possible. He explained that they are in talks with all relevant stakeholders and that discussions are also taking place at board level. “As you know during the time of COVID there was no international competitions, so we would like to accord our athletes the opportunity to compete to accumulate points, because you know it's the highest accolade that you can give to an athlete. We do not want to just reward mediocrity type of work. We really need to ensure that by the end day we award athletes for the good work they have done”Mwiya said. Sport, like many other sectors, has been gravely affected by the COVID 19 pandemic, but Mwiya is hopeful that the sports awards will still take place upon board's approval. The awards have become the country's biggest sporting event were sportsmen and women are rewarded for their excellence on and off the field of play.
