Swakopmund hosts 4th Erongo Law Enforcement Games

The fourth edition of the Erongo Law Enforcement Games was held at the coastal town of Swakopmund this past weekend. More than 300 law enforcement officers competed in different sport codes over the four-day event. Erongo Police Women's Patron Network. Members of the various law enforcement agencies started off the games with a parade through the streets of Swakopmund to the Vineta sport stadium, where the official opening took place. This year saw the following agencies competing in the 2019 games: Namibian Air Force, The Navy, 125 Motorized infantry battalion, 44th Artillery Regiment, The Police and the Correctional Services. The aim of the games is to strengthen ties, enhance fitness levels and build a spirit of unity among various members of law enforcement. The theme of this year's games was "We say no to gender-based violence" At the opening, the patron of the Erongo police Women network, Claudia Lofty-Eaton in her statement said that it is very important to have games like these for agencies to practise camaraderie. "It is a well-known fact that sport makes a vital contribution to fighting spirit, morale, personal development and ultimately, operational effectiveness of the armed forces. In addition, sport is an inviable addition to help support the values and standards of the armed responses. The values and standards of armed forces are the value and standards of the broader Namibian community" Lofty-Eaton said. Also at the opening, the special advisor to the Governor of Erongo, Adelheid Kandjala in her speech said that sport is about trust and responsibility towards players, teammates and is about the successes as well as the failures that may arise. "Sporting events such as this, not only promotes cohesion among the force members in the region. It also greatly contributes to good health and fitness, which is important especially for law enforcement officers who need to be physically fit for crime prevention operations in the country" she said. She said team sport teaches about teamwork and getting along with others and it instills a will to work together to achieve a common aim. In this year edition's, officers took part in Football , Netball , Darts, Athletics and Volleyball. The male Football division was won by the Navy, with the Airforce ending in second spot, and Nampol in third. The Navy women also took the soccer title with Nampol in second and the Army in third. The Netball competition for the third year was won by the Navy, beating the Army who received silver, with Nampol taking bronze. The Volleyball category was won by the Navy, followed by the Airforce and Nampol. This year's games were hosted by the region's Correctional Services.
