There has been a growing concern among Rugby lovers across the country that every time the Rugby World Cup draws close a local coach is put aside as a foreign coach is appointed to lead the Welwitchias at the world cup finals. Speaking on the weekly sport show, COVID-19 VS SPORT, the Namibian Rugby Union's vice-president Governance, Walter Don, emphasised the matter of empowering local coaches even beyond world cup qualifications. “We need to empower our local coaches, invest in them. But our strategic concern is, we cannot have qualified for six World Cups and we can't sit with a vacuum every post world cup with no Namibian coach and technical team in place. We are adamant and very sincere about developing our own people” Don said. Don further explained that most of the foreign coaches like in the past , take a big junk of the NRU's budget with them, while that money could have been spent within the country through empowering local coaches. Johan Diergaardt is the only Namibian coach who qualified with the National side and went to the 2011 world cup as head coach, compared to other Namibians who were dismissed a few months before the elite tournament. Despite this, Diergaardt is still open to work with anybody for experience. “I don't mind a foreign coach coming in to assist. Am open for that, there is always a shortage and we need help” Diergaardt said. Rugby being one of the contact sports is currently prohibited in stage 2 of the COVID-19 regulations and will have to wait for green light from the Government to return to training.
