Wrestlers back in action

As various sports codes are resuming with their activities after a long halt due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the After School Centre Wrestling Club in Windhoek has also begun training once again. The After School Centre, which is situated in Katutura's Grysblok residential area, caters for more than 30 school-going students, under the leadership of Cuban coach Luis Forcelledo. Forcelledo told NBC that the Centre resumed training last week with fitness and conditioning sessions including activities such as skipping and push-ups. He also explained that the Centre was unfortunately broken into last week but that the incident did not discourage them from continuing in their mission. Instead, the Cuban coach maintained that all measures are in place to sanitize and monitor the health of the young Wrestlers. Asked whether Covid-19 has affected the qualification of the wrestlers for international events, Forcelledo explained that it did, but that he remains hopeful even after the Asian Championships were cancelled. “Now at the moments we are meeting with the Namibia Wrestling Federation. We have divided into two groups, One is training in the morning with the 2024 Commonwealth group together with Romio who is preparing for 2021 Olympic qualifiers and from the afternoon we have the boys who are preparing for the 2022 Youth Olympic games” Forcelledo said. NBC sport also interviewed Romio Goliath, who has been preparing for the Ocean Championship which was recently postponed. “In Sport, there is never enough time to train, but the time you get you should use it wisely as Wrestler is an individual sport, My wish is to be in the best physical state and qualify. If I qualify I’m aiming for an Olympic medal” Goliath said. The last time the Wrestlers participated was in the African Continental Wrestling Championship in Algeria earlier this year, where Goliath and fellow wrestler Kevin Vleermuis scooped Silver and Bronze respectively.
