Young Golfer stays focused despite limited resources

If there is dedication, strong will AND love for a certain sport, nothing will stop a youngster from practising - not even the kinds of obstacles that might seem overwhelming. Fifteen-year-old Tangeni Namwandi from Walvisbay started playing golf three years ago, after he was introduced to the game by his uncle. With two clubs that were given to him, Namwandi started hitting golf balls and immediately fell in love with golf. This teen's progress shows that if there's commitment, nothing can stop a person from playing. It also shows that if there is a will, there is a way. As the sport of Golf is rather expensive, Namwandi does not practise on golf greens, but any place he can practise on. One of the places he practises at, is a pan alongside the main road to Swakopmund, with self-made driving tees and putting holes. He recently stepped up his game, after getting a full Golf set as a recipient of Delano Muller's initiative, that aims at making sport accessible to everybody. He said with his gift from Muller, he has big dreams and wants to compete more regularly in competitions. He already got a taste of victory, by winning a first place for beginners a year ago. “I saw Tiger Woods on TV and fell in love with the game. My uncle took me for classes, but with only two clubs, it was not easy. With my new set of clubs, however I want to train hard to become the best player in Namibia and also play more with my friends” Namwandi said. Namwandi currently has no coach of his own, but this is not stopping him from helping others to start playing the game, coaching other boys that want to start playing the sport as well. “We normally play golf after school with Tangeni. We first started off with two clubs and one ball, so if one tee's off, the other one can do the put. With Tangeni's new golf set, we made holes in the ground and started playing in the streets. Tangeni is coaching us to be as good as him” Ignatius Kandume said. With commitment like this, the hope is that he is seen and helped with proper gear and coaching, ultimately, not to be forgotten as a young sportsman.
