The just-ended Namibia Annual Sport Awards saw a 10-year-old boy named Jonas Shilongo stealing the show. The youngster received the NASA Community Inspirational Award. Jonas Shilongo has always shown remarkable skills to maneuver the sport field like a pro - DESPITE the fact that he was born with an anomaly on one of his legs. Shilongo, a grade four pupil from Orange Combined School in the Omusati region, gained popularity in his village and beyond in recent years and is seen as a young pioneer in championing para athletes rights. As the boy walked on to the stage on Saturday, the crowd rose to give him a standing ovation - the only one observed for the night, a clear indication of the massive impact he continues to have in the sporting arena. Jonas' story has touched many people, enabling him to get donations from across the country for a prosthetic leg. New Life Medical Suppliers sponsored close to 50 thousand Namibia dollars, while the other half was sourced through various donations. Shilongo could not say much on the night, as he was visibly moved by the honour he received. “I am so happy to have received this award. I have never envisioned myself being at such a platform. I never knew that I will ever receive an award for partaking in soccer which is my hobby. I am so grateful to everyone especially the person who recorded me playing in the streets in Katutura and posting the video on Facebook. I want to meet him or her one-day” Shilongo said. He is set to travel to the Swakopmund for his fittings on the 25th of November.
