The Hifikepunye Pohamba Combined School in Ohangwena's Epembe Constituency now has a science laboratory and a library space, thanks to the family of the former President Hifikepunye Pohamba.

The yet-to-be-furnished facilities were constructed at a cost of close to N$800,000.

The need for the laboratory and library was raised last year by the school's leadership and the Pohamba family made a commitment to fund the construction of a two-classroom block, which now houses a library and science laboratory.

Ohangwena Education Director Isak Hamatwi says science enables people to think critically and solve problems in society and aids effective teaching and learning.

Libraries also play a vital role in promoting literacy.

In her keynote address, the Deputy Minister of Education, Arts and Culture Faustina Caley says it is disheartening that some schools still do not have science labs and libraries, which are essential for achieving optimum learning and teaching results.

"This donation marks a giant leap towards making access to science modeling and reading part and parcel of everyday life in the teaching and learning environment."

Former President Hifikepunye Pohamba in a speech read on his behalf reminded Namibians that education is a shared responsibility.

"Let me once again encourage our children to use these facilities wisely to shape their future and career."

Deputy Prime Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and Ambassador Albertus Aochamub donated four computers and other items to the school.

A former teacher at the school who is named after the lab and library Bertha Shaunawa Ndevahoma gave N$10,700 to the school.

The laboratory and library still need to be fully furnished.

There is also a need for extra classes as the school plans to extend its curriculum.
