MPs in the National Council have proposed the revision of criteria used by the Namibia Students Financial Assistance Fund (NSFAF) to fund the students.
They say the majority of students who ought to benefit from the fund do not receive financial aid, questioning the fund's fairness.
The NSFAF receives a large portion of the Ministry of Higher Education budget, and MPs believe the money is sufficient to cater to a larger population of students.
The MPs explained that some of the students are still in need, although their guardians' earnings are outside the current qualifying parameters.
The MPs reminded former NSFAF beneficiaries to repay their loans to support students in need.
They have also requested that the Ministry of Higher Education, Technology, and Innovation facilitate the construction of more tertiary institutions where there are none.
They say this would promote equity in education and help to close the gap between urban and rural areas.
In addition, MPs have called for the National Qualifications Authority to investigate unregistered institutions and make sure that they comply with the standard of delivering quality education.
